Due to the effect of global warming, the world has experienced an uneven distribution of rainfall in recent years, causing floods or droughts. This development has attracted the concern of Taipei Water Department (TWD). Taipei City is the capital and the largest metropolis in Taiwan, and provides tap water with quality comparable to other developed nations. However, 97% of the tap water used by millions of residents in Taipei metropolis comes from just one source: Xindian River and Feitsui Reservoir. Taipei thus faces rather high risk of water supply shortage. Numerous residents in northern Taiwan still remember the painful experience of the severe drought that occurred during March to June 2002. To prevent such a situation recurring, TWD has implemented measures such as “leakage control and pipeline replacement, enhancing reserve capacity, and water conservation scheme” in an attempt to ensure sustainability of water resource in Taipei metropolis.
